The ask is "is the kids platform an 8-year-old keeps begging for actually safe and fairly priced.

Roblox Corporation's user-generated-content gaming platform on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Xbox, PlayStation, and Meta Quest. Free to download with a Robux economy — IAP ladder runs $4.99 (Premium 450) to $99.99 (10,000 Robux). ESRB T (raised from E10+ on Sept 8, 2022). Apple's App Privacy label lists nine "Data Linked to You" categories. Per Roblox's 2023 annual report, 21% of users are under 9 and 21% are 9-12. Real safety updates shipped Nov 2024 (under-13 DM block) and Jul 2025 (Trusted Connections), with parental PIN, spend caps, and content-maturity labels in the Safety Center. The other side of the public record: Bloomberg counts 24+ U.S. predator arrests via Roblox grooming since 2018; Hindenburg Research alleges metric inflation (Roblox rejects); Hunterbrook documents undisclosed SEC and FTC probes. Safety lands below 60 — the rule on this site safety-caps the total at 70.

Split Verdict

What parents wrote vs. what their kids did

Quotes are sourced from public App Store, Google Play, and Reddit reviews captured during research. Reviewer handles shown verbatim where the platform makes them public; we never invent quotes or named children.

Parents wrote
4reviews cited

Across App Store, Play Store, and Reddit's r/parenting parent commentary on Roblox is the most consistently flagged title in our catalog. The recurring note: the platform itself is neutral but the Robux economy (a $4.99-to-$99.99 ladder pegged to virtual goods in third-party games) and the user-generated content with limited moderation are the safety concerns parents return to.

Kids' reactions
0parents describe kids

Parent reviews describe 7–10 year olds requesting Robux purchases regularly and encountering inappropriate user-generated content or chat in third-party games — the predictable outcome of a platform marketed to kids with adult-grade attention-capture mechanics.

None of the cited reviews describe a specific child reaction.

The Bottom Line

What's good, what's not

+ Worth It
  • Real safety updates shipped late 2024 — Roblox Nov 18, 2024 newsroom: under-13 direct messages outside of games are blocked; parents can access account, set spend limits, view friends list. NPR + TechCrunch confirmed the lockdown framing.
  • July 2025 Trusted Connections rollout layered an off-platform-style chat gate for users 13+ — requires "an existing real-world relationship, verified by QR scan or Contact Importer." Roblox's own published policy.
  • Roblox Safety Center documents the parental-control surface — monthly spending limits, account-PIN, content maturity labels (N/A → Restricted), parents can see the friends list and remotely set restrictions. The supervised case is genuinely buildable.
  • Engagement is real and the kids-on-Roblox population is real — Bloomberg counts ~78M DAU with about 40% under 13. Per Roblox's 2023 annual report, 21% of users are under 9 and 21% are 9-12. The audience scale is the load-bearing fact.
  • ESRB raised the rating from E10+ to T on September 8, 2022 — honest disclosure that the user-generated content surface is not the same as a curated kids' game. The "Diverse Content: Discretion Advised" descriptor names the catch.
  • A positive App Store kid review names what works: "Roblox is so much fun… there's millions of games." The fun signal across the user base is genuine — the safety question is high-stakes precisely because the kid actually wants to play.
Watch Out
  • The CEO's own line on safety, on the record (Game Developer, Mar 13 2025): "If you're not comfortable, don't let your kids be on Roblox." The company is assigning the burden to parents — a documented position that runs against the platform's kid-targeted footprint.
  • Bloomberg Businessweek (Jul 2024): "Since 2018, at least 24 people had been arrested in the United States on charges of abducting or sexually abusing children they had groomed on Roblox." The volume is documented, not anecdotal.
  • The Guardian (Apr 2025) — five months after the under-13 DM lockdown shipped: "An account registered as a 42-year-old could add and publicly interact with accounts registered as children as young as five." The moderation reality lags the policy.
  • The price model and the dark-pattern stack — Apple's storefront flags "Loot Boxes." The cheapest IAP is $4.99 (Premium 450); ladder runs to $99.99 (10,000 Robux). There is no $0.99 floor. The retail-vs-developer Robux conversion runs ~3.3× against the player.
  • App Privacy label is heavy by category — nine "Data Linked to You" buckets including Location, Contact Info, Identifiers, used for "Developer's Advertising or Marketing, Analytics, Product Personalization." Not a clean privacy posture for a 6-year-old's account.
  • Hunterbrook (2024) documents "undisclosed probes by SEC Enforcement and FTC" — the FTC holds 9,237 pages of responsive records on Roblox investigations. Hindenburg Research separately alleged 25-42%+ metric inflation; Roblox's rebuttal: "simply misleading."
  • Parent-spend journalism is consistent — ABC News quotes a mom after an $800 charge ("don't link your debit cards"); ParentsTogether quotes a parent after a thousand-dollar kid spend: "she thought she was playing with monopoly money." App Store echoes the refund frustration.
Skills Developed

What your kid is actually practising

Executive function

The Robux economy is an inhibition test for the kid and a working-memory test for the parent. The kid has to decline an in-game cosmetic offer in real time; the parent has to remember which spend cap is set on which account. Apple's "Loot Boxes" descriptor and the absence of a $0.99 entry tier on iOS make the impulse purchase a real demand on self-regulation.

Problem solving

Variance is the story — Roblox hosts millions of experiences ranging from obstacle courses to economy simulators to roleplay games. Some experiences put genuine multi-step problem-solving demand on the player (tycoon games, escape rooms), others are skinner-box loops. The platform-level rating averages out, but the per-experience signal is what counts at the kitchen table.

Creativity

Roblox Studio is the creator path — kids who graduate from playing experiences to making them learn real game-design and Lua scripting. The platform's own developer payout schedule documents a creator economy with hundreds of millions paid annually. For most younger kids, the creativity is consumed (avatar customization, world choice) rather than produced.

Theory of mind

Multiplayer interaction with strangers exercises perspective-taking and intent-reading — and is the same surface where the documented predator harm happens (Bloomberg: 24+ U.S. arrests since 2018; Guardian Apr 2025: 42yo account interacting with 5yo account possible after the lockdown). The skill demand is real; the safety substrate it runs on is not yet aligned with the age band of half the players.

Social play

Roblox is a multiplayer-default platform — the load-bearing skill demand is social interaction with strangers and friends in shared experiences. Bloomberg confirms ~78M DAU; Roblox's 2023 annual report shows 42% of users under 13. The social-play surface is the product, not a feature; the moderation gap documented in The Guardian (Apr 2025) is the consequence.
